What is the Basic & Scientific Calculator?

The Basic & Scientific Calculator is an online tool that one keypad for everyday arithmetic and scientific math — switch modes for trig, logs, powers, π, e, and DEG/RAD angles.

What formula does the Basic & Scientific Calculator use?

Immediate execution: pending op resolves on the next operator or equals — a ⊕ b, then continue. Scientific unaries apply to the display value (sin/cos/tan use DEG or RAD). Power: a^b. Constants: π ≈ 3.14159…, e ≈ 2.71828…

How does the Basic & Scientific Calculator work?

Use Basic mode for quick +, −, ×, ÷, percent, and memory keys. Tap Scientific to unlock sin, cos, tan, inverses, log, ln, powers, roots, factorial, π, and e. Angle functions respect DEG or RAD. Operations evaluate as you go — classic handheld style.

Formula Used

The rule below is what this calculator applies. Variable definitions follow when symbols are used.

Equation

Immediate execution: pending op resolves on the next operator or equals — a ⊕ b, then continue. Scientific unaries apply to the display value (sin/cos/tan use DEG or RAD). Power: a^b. Constants: π ≈ 3.14159…, e ≈ 2.71828…

Sample inputs and the results this calculator produces for the scenario below.

DEG
Display
90
Function
sin
Then
× 5 =

Results

sin(90°)
1
Final result
5

In degrees, sine of 90 is 1. Multiplying that display by 5 gives 5 — a typical homework chain using Scientific mode plus the classic × and = keys.

Basic mode for everyday arithmetic

Basic mode is the familiar handheld layout: digits, +, −, ×, ÷, percent, sign toggle, backspace, and memory keys (MC, MR, M+, M−). It is built for grocery totals, tip checks, unit prices, and any two-number step you would do on a desk calculator.

Unlike a spreadsheet cell that waits for a full formula, this pad evaluates each operator as you go. Enter 12, press +, enter 8, press ×, enter 2 — you see the running chain resolve the way most physical calculators do.

Use AC for a full reset and C to clear only the current entry while keeping a pending operator. That split matters when you mistype the second number but already set the first part of the sum.

Scientific mode — trig, logs, and powers

Scientific mode adds a function strip above the classic pad. Trig (sin, cos, tan and inverses), common and natural logs, square, cube, square root, cube root, reciprocal, factorial, 10ˣ, eˣ, xʸ, plus π and e.

Pick DEG or RAD before you press a trig key. Degrees match school geometry and most word problems; radians match calculus and many programming libraries. The display shows which angle mode is active.

Unary keys act on whatever is on the screen. For example, enter 90 in DEG mode and press sin to get 1. Enter 5 and press n! for 120. Enter 2, tap xʸ, enter 8, then equals for 256.

How this calculator evaluates expressions

beMyCalc uses immediate-execution arithmetic — the same mental model as most four-function and scientific handhelds. There is no full parentheses algebra editor; each step commits when you choose the next operator or equals.

That design keeps the UI fast for phone taps and avoids multi-line formula editing. If you need percentage-of, percent change, or bill splits with many people, jump to the dedicated Percentage or Bill Split tools linked below.

Invalid math (divide by zero, √ of a negative, log of a non-positive number, non-integer factorial) shows Error. Press AC to recover. Memory and angle mode survive a clear so you can continue a longer session.

When to use Basic vs Scientific

Stay in Basic for shopping, budgeting scratchpads, and mental-math checks. Switch to Scientific for homework: right triangles, compound growth sketches with powers, logarithms, and factorial counting problems.

You do not lose your current display when you change modes — only the available keys change. That makes it easy to finish a sum, then take a square root or sine of the result in one flow.

For EMI, SIP, tax, or unit conversion, use the specialist calculators on beMyCalc. This page is the general-purpose pad when you want one tool that covers both pocket-calculator and school-scientific needs.

Step-by-step

  1. Choose Basic for everyday arithmetic or Scientific for trig, logs, and powers.
  2. Enter a number, tap an operator, enter the next number — or apply a scientific function to the display.
  3. For sin/cos/tan, set DEG or RAD first so the angle unit matches your problem.
  4. Press = to finish a chain, or AC to clear and start over.

Calc — Frequently Asked Questions

Each question is answered directly below. Expand any item for the full response.

What is the difference between Basic and Scientific mode?

Basic is the classic four-function pad for everyday sums. Scientific keeps that pad and adds a function row for trig, logs, powers, roots, factorial, and constants. Your current number stays when you switch modes.

When should I use DEG vs RAD?

DEG (degrees) is the everyday default — a right angle is 90°. RAD (radians) is common in higher math and programming — a right angle is π/2. Switch with the DEG/RAD control before using sin, cos, or tan.

Does this calculator chain operations like a physical keypad?

Yes. It uses immediate execution: enter a number, choose an operator, enter the next number, and the pending step resolves when you press the next operator or equals. That matches most pocket calculators, not full algebraic parentheses mode.

What happens on divide by zero or invalid math?

Impossible results (such as divide by zero, square root of a negative, or log of zero) show Error. Press AC to clear and start again. Angle mode (DEG/RAD) is kept across a full clear.

Can I use keyboard shortcuts on desktop?

Yes. Number keys and . enter digits; + − * / and ^ set operators; Enter or = evaluates; Backspace deletes a digit; Escape clears (on the full page); % applies percent. Scientific function keys are tap-only on the pad.

Is my calculation stored on a server?

No. Arithmetic runs locally in the browser. You can share a link to this calculator page, but the keypad state itself is not saved to our servers.

What is the MU key for?

MU is markup — useful when you know cost and a target margin percent. Enter cost, press an operator context as on a classic business calculator, then MU to estimate selling price. For dedicated margin math, also try the Markup Calculator.
